Investment Update
It’s no secret summer in the UK can be a hit and miss: on one year we might be spoiled by a good few months of glorious weather, but equally on another year we might have to consider ourselves lucky to enjoy two consecutive weeks of uninterrupted sunshine.
But one thing is undeniable: the UK loves sports, and the excitement around the events taking place this summer is palpable.
So many athletes have prepared for moments like the Euro 2024, the Wimbledon tennis, or the Olympics and Paralympics in Paris… no pressure there!
Being an elite athlete requires training, preparation, and mental resilience that builds up through the years. Through practice, they patiently build a process that they trust and follow religiously.
But isn’t “trusting the process” also the recipe for success in investing? We think so. As Chief Investment Officer Martyn Surguy says, “success over the long term is built on the construction of a proper process”.
This is why we’ve thought about the similarities between sports and investing. In our Q3 Investment Update, we look at the importance of sticking to the plan and trusting the process to reach success in the long term.
Ahmer Tirmizi, our Head of Fixed Income Strategy, points to the use of data as an essential component of tactics in both sports and investing; that’s why at 7IM our gameplan for the next 12 months involves healthcare, metals and mining, and Japanese Yen – capitalising on cheap valuations and growth potential over the long term, as Ahmer explains.
But sports is not the only topic in town. The UK has recently come out of a general election, and a new Labour government has begun writing a new chapter. There are a lot of parallels between coaching a sports team and running a country, so Ben Kumar, Head of Equity Strategy, looks at challenges and opportunities for the UK in this new stage for UK politics.
Lastly, we turn to the Euro 2024, which UEFA named “the most sustainable European Championship event of all time”. But is it really? Wenqian Zeng, Junior ESG Investment Analyst, asks the difficult questions on climate-related challenges and opportunities that will need addressing for the sport to continue over the next century.
Sticking to the plan, the process, is what takes investors to their long-term destination, not zigzagging emotionally to short-term news flow.
